Teach introductory and advanced courses in photojournalism within Grady College’s journalism program. Courses cover basic photography skills, composition, lighting, applications of evolving technology, documentary photography, ethics and storytelling skills. Incorporated online presentation of images so all students could share their work. Developed a “weekend workshop” where students are able to shoot, be edited by working professionals and return immediately to apply critiques to an ongoing story. The first workshop resulted in a four-page special section in The Red & Black.

Designed curriculum for a new upper-division course titled “Digital PhotoStories” that focuses on using digital cameras while completing variousphotographic projects. Topics covered include grant writing, documentary photo stories, individually tailored photo projects, location lighting, digital capture andworkflow.

Teaching Assistant (January 2003 – May 2005)

Assigned to teach photography, graphic design and broadcast journalism courses and labs. Responsibilities include lesson planning, software training and leading critiquing sessions for students. Work extensively with the Department of Defense’s Military Photojournalism program. Redesigned portions of curriculum dealing with location lighting and digital imaging, including production of publications for student use.

Photo Editor (December 2000 – November 2002)

Responsible for coordinating coverage throughout the Mohawk Valley region of Central New York and overseeing a staff of four photographers. Oversaw the conversion of the newspaper to a fully digital department, including the final capital proposal, equipment acquisition, training and workflow changes. Built an archiving system to protect all of the raw images efficiently. Streamlined the procedures for moving images from the photo department to the copydesk. Coordinated coverage for the 2001 Empire State Games that included five days of special sections and live web updates every three hours during the competitions, which brought 9,000 athletes to the area. Worked with section editors to enhance special projects, such as a four-day series looking at how young Americans reacted to the September 11, 2001, terrorists attacks; a look at special education in city schools; a comparison of how Rome and Plattsburgh, N.Y., coped with the loss of military installations in the mid-1990s; previews for the Baseball Hall of Fame induction weekends; and numerous, quarterly “community spotlight” sections devoted to towns and villages throughout the area. Planned and implemented the coverage for the 25th annual Boilermaker 15k Road Race, the largest 15 kilometer race in the country. Worked with a photo researcher and did the final editing on the newspaper’s first book, a look at the first 25 years of the Boilermaker. In September 2002, the department took seven of 15 possible photo awards in the Associated Press’ state contest.

SchoolSports Magazine, Boston, Mass.
Director of Photography (July 1999 – April 2000)

Organized photo coverage for a series of ten regional magazines and 35 web sites dedicated to covering high school sports. Built a department of three editors and one technician as well as finding over 90 freelance photographers in 35 cities across the country. Responsible for overseeing daily workflow of images, assignments, special projects and budgets as well as assisting other departments with technical issues.

Assistant Chief Photographer, Staff Photographer (February 1997 – July 1999)

Between February 1997 and April 1999, was a staff photographer assigned to the MetroWest Daily News, a 35,000 circulation, seven day daily covering the 30 town MetroWest area. Covered local, college and professional sports as well as general news and feature stories. Worked with over 30 freelance photographers on a regular basis, editing and helping to file their images. In April 1999 was transferred to the Neponset Valley unit and promoted to assistant chief photographer. Was then responsible for all photography for the Dedham Daily Transcript and six weekly newspapers, including budgeting and hiring of freelancers.    

The Daily Advance, Elizabeth City, N.C.
Staff Photographer (August 1996 – February 1997)

Staff photographer for a six day a week newspaper covering the Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina. Responsible for all aspects of coverage as well as production work. Worked extensively with graphics editor to upgrade technology, improve flow of assignments and final images, establish a better work schedule and address budget problems by investigating new sources for supplies.

Provided coverage throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Routinely assigned to out of bureau events requiring the set-up and running of on-site darkrooms and editing facilities. For most of 1995 oversaw photo coverage of Rhode Island.

Chief Photographer (December 1992 - May 1993)

Oversaw photo coverage for four new weekly newspapers in the Northern Virginia area. Assisted in designing and editing newspapers as well as shooting or assigning all photographs.

Freelance clients include Agence France-Presse, USA Today, Tompkins Cortland Community College, Hondo Mesa Records, The Orlando Sentinel, The Louisville Courier-Journal, Regan Communications, New Balance, Bentley College and Wellesley College. Am a consultant for David Doubilet’s Undersea Images. Images are represented by PictureDesk International.

Activities:

In March 2005 was appointed the Student Internship Co-Chair for the National Press Photographers Association and charged with rebuilding the organization’s internship guidelines and database.

Am an active member of the Central New York Region of the Sports Car Club of America, serving for the last three years as chair of the rally program. In 1999 and 2000, was the North East Division's Class L RoadRally champion; in 2001 and 2003, was the Class E champion.

In August 2001, I became Chairman of the Black River Stages ClubRally, an automobile race run the last weekend of September in Harrisville, N.Y. Based on the efforts of my organizing team, the Central New York Region was named ClubRally Region of the Year in the first year we organized an event. The event brought more than 50 race teams, 100 volunteer workers and an estimated 3,000 spectators to the village.

Received the Richard H. Posenaur Memorial Award for Outstanding Member of the Year from the Sports Car Club of America’s Central New York Region for 2002.

From 1997 through 2000, was a member of the Touring Club of New England, serving on the board of directors, as well as being the editor of Driver & Navigator, the club's newsletter. Was the 1999 Class B champion for the club and also received the Larry Reid Memorial Trophy, given for outstanding service to the club.

Am the crew chief for the Greg Healey/John MacLeod Subaru Impreza SCCA ProRally team, responsible for car preparation and event service. Have also worked on the crew for national champions Henry and Cindy Krowlikowski at the Cherokee Trails International ProRally.

Am a licensed amateur radio operator (KB1FPX).
