Walk About

Melbourne, Australia

We headed to the stadium to get our bearings, then the team headed in one direction and I took a long walk back to the apartment. Stopped along the Yarra River, outside of the Flinders Street Station and in a very funky mall.

Parting

Junee, Australia

I departed Sydney for Melbourne, choosing the all-day train ride so we could see some of the countryside. Shortly after I took my seat (aisle, not window, alas), a gentleman sat next to me.

Six or seven hours later, after a nearly non-stop conversation, Chris departed at Junee, to be picked up by his sister-in-law and then to continue on to see his father.

The train was slow and delayed, but wonderfully relaxed.

Connections, New and Old

Sydney, Australia

Our first full day here, so why are we here? We brought 17 students to Australia to cover the Women’s World Cup for the Associated Press. In a few days we’ll split into three teams, one headed north to Brisbane, one staying put and mine will head south to Melbourne.

We started the day with a visit from Mark Baker, AP’s photo editor for Australia and New Zealand. What I expected to be a short logistics and welcome visit turned into a three-plus hour long discussion and tutorial with the students – it was fantastic.

We then headed out to explore.
