Hope for a New Generation … maybe

I Twittered this earlier today:

And, aside from David Byrne on the radio, there was no specific reason to say that. It was just something I felt, and so … and so … I put it out there. And it got … um … let me count … one response. From someone who’s musical taste I suspect is better than the average college student’s.

We were packing up for a day trip and, since we’re probably selling my car, I had undone all the wiring for the fancy iPod player I had and pulled out the XM receiver, which left us needing CDs. The small girl child asked for something in particular from the mess of a collection we now have (They Might Be Giants), and I asked her to pull a Talking Heads CD. Ten minutes later, she was still reading titles … she was curious

I hope.

Hope.

Hope.

  1. Dear Mej, Well I started to write a comment saying that I disagree with you, but then I started to think about it and I came to the conclusion that you were on to something. Nonetheless, there are bands around like The Modern Skirts (of Athens, yeah!) that are worth the time.

  2. Please note that not everything from my youth is better than everything from the current crop. There are a lot of things I do like (The Modern Skirts included). Just, on average, I don’t see as many bands that resonate with me as I used to.

Where is the 21st century version of Scruffy the Cat? Or The Del Fuegos? Or Two Nice Girls? Or Tim Lee? Or The Cure? Or The Cult? Or any of a dozen others? There is not a constant flow of bands I really want to sneak out of the house to see here in Athens, the quintessential college town, as there was in the quasi-college town of Syracuse 20 years ago.

    Just sayin’.
