These four images are in chronological order, starting with an early morning departure from the hotel lobby and ending with a wonderful dinner with friends.

The National Press Photographers Association Northern Short Course is an educaitonal event, but it’s also a reunion. I see the people I have known and worked with for decades, I meet new people and learn new things. It’s why I bring the students – to introduce them to the community, show them they belong.

Long Ride North


Somewhere on I-95, Virginia

I loaded a University of Georgia van with students and drove them to Falls Church, Virginia, so they could attend the National Press Photographers Association Northern Short Course for the next few days. It’s a long haul, but the value is immense – I have so many memories of these events from my undergrad days, things I saw and learned that will impact how I tell stories today.

Rebuild

Several months ago, I picked up some early-1970s Canon gear, including a chrome-nosed 50 mm f/1.4 lens with the metal hood. That hood had some bushings that kept it tight to the lens, but they had both worn out and disintegrated. After some futzing with different materials, I was able to cut some new ones.

I can’t think of a small lens with a disassembleable hood anymore. Or even a metal hood …
