Spotted on my way home from Atlanta.

I was at Georgia Tech for the day, talking to three classes about the Georgia Climate Project and how to tell stories about the impacts on the state. Part of that lesson is about using audio to tell stories.

After having the classes close their eyes, I played a piece Rob Rosenthal made and asked them to raise their hand when they started to feel tense. Just about every hand went up at some point, usually clustered near a few segments. Try it for yourself.

At the end of Syracuse University’s Fall Workshop, we had a little thank you ceremony for my advisor and friend, David Sutherland, who will retire at the end of this year after 40 years of teaching at Newhouse. It is hard to put into words what he has meant to so many of us.

Partly because he uses so few words – his critiques are legendary for their brevity.

Sutherland gave me my two careers, as a photojournalist and an educator, and his voice is inside my head constantly. Every day I teach, there’s some of his vision there.
